The Tweed and the Cheviots
Tourist Attractions:
Kelso Abbey, Floors Castle , Jedburgh Jail, Mary Queen of Scots Museum
Start & Finish: Kelso
Approximate Distance: 130Miles
Route Overview:
This route starts with an easy run along the A698 and A68 to Jedburgh. After this, comes the highlight of the trip, the B6357 across the Cheviots Hills. This road is one of three five-star roads in the chapter and with a distance of thirty-six miles, it’s the longest stretch of uninterrupted tarmac available. A handful of villages along its course mean it’s also the quietest. The highlights include the sweeping bends of the Wauchope forest and some of the deserted valleys running alongside the Larriston Fells. After the B6537 and time for a short break in Langholm, it’s fast and furious all the way to Lockerbie and the bottom of another great, the B723. The route actually takes a left, halfway along the B723 at Boreland but miss the turning: it’s worth it, as the road is superb all the way to Eskdalemuir another seven miles on. There is even a cutting on the hill into Eskdalemuir to turn round and return to the route, which turned onto unmarked roads just south of Boreland. From Moffat, the A708 runs through rolling countryside all the way to Selkirk, thirty miles later. Finally, the last road of the route, the A699, is a superb eighteen-mile blast that joins the Tweed on its way back into Kelso.
