A combination of the East and West loops, this route is designed for the hardcore, those who believe scenery is for postcards. The route starts from Rothbury heading first down to the

Military Road

, the B6318 for a stomach churning thirty-seven miles. Stomach churning because of the dips and humps along its arrow-straight sections alongside Hadrian’s Wall.  After Langholm and seventeen fast miles to Lockerbie, the excellent B723 and an unmarked road takes the route to Moffat, the most westerly point on the drive. The A708 takes the route back east, a great run over St Mary’s Loch and Yarrow Water. Selkirk to Hawick is dispatched by the A7 and the route returns to desolate roads all the way down to Kielder Water. From Kielder the route heads for Otterburn, via Bellingham, and finally back to Rothbury on the B6341.
